We take broken, unloved and unused drum kits and transform them into furniture, clocks and lighting. Based in Wells, Somerset, Rock Terrace was informally founded in 2012, in the music room of musician, fabric shop owner and keen "up-cycyler", Sam Wheeler. Faced with a few too-broken-to-fix drums (coupled with a serious reluctance to ever throw out a musical instrument) Sam began experimenting with converting the trashed instruments into furniture.
With a wide range of high quality leather, fabric and foam available from his business, as well as being able to draw on 15 years' experience working with textiles, Sam was able to create some great little seats, later branching out into clocks, bedside tables, chairs, storage boxes and coffee tables. After spending free time making drum furniture for friends and family, Sam decided to attempt to sell a couple of pieces. They sold. Immediately. The music room quickly morphed into a workshop and Rock Terrace was born. Our aim is to create instrument based pieces which are usable and stylish. As far as we're concerned, unique furniture should be practical, comfortable and attractive first, and a novelty second. Our pieces are still recognisable as drums, but sometimes only at a second glance. We want our furniture to look great, not just unusual, and be able to fit into any home. We only use good quality upholstery fabric and leather, with contract grade fire retardant upholstery foam, with our signature piece - the leather upholstered bass drum stool - at the core of what we do. Oh, and Sam's still drumming.....just ask the neighbours. |
